Angry? Stop it.

Angry? Stop it.

Trump is ANGRY. He tells us that he is. You are angry. You are mad about what politicians have done to this country. You are angry about sending people to Washington and them not doing what they said they would do. You feel lied to, disenfranchised, frustrated, and bitterness eats at you. You want vengeance…you want to send those “establishment” politicians a message. You are fed up! Someone has to stand up to them, right?!! You agree with the notion that we should just burn the political establishment to the ground and start over. Policy is irrelevant, really. You just like the red-faced expression of feelings. Trump communicates, finally, the anger that you have been feeling for so long…and you like that. You don’t care what he says…because it needs to be said, and he says it for you. Maybe you wouldn’t use such colorful words…but still. Trump will show them…and you support that. But…here’s the problem. You are a Christian.

You are risen with Christ and are to have put off the old man and his deeds. You are to have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of God (Col.3:1-10). As a child of God, a new creature in Christ…you NO LONGER have a “right” to your anger. The Bible says…

“But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.” (Colossians 3:8)

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:29–32)

You see…the emotion that drives your support needs to be laid aside. By God’s principles, you have no right to hold onto the offenses you feel. I know…you like to quote Ephesians 4:26, “Be ye angry and sin not:”, but is that what you are really doing? There is more to that verse. It goes on to say, “let not the sun go down upon your wrath”. You go to sleep with wrath, and you wake up with it in the morning. I know…your anger is “righteous”. You are better than I am because I don’t remember a time in my life where I have had “righteous” anger. Mine is sinful, carnal, prideful anger every time. This is a blog post, and not a book, so I can’t list every verse dealing with anger but let’s look at a few:

“He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: And a man of wicked devices is hated.” (Proverbs 14:17)

“An angry man stirreth up strife, And a furious man aboundeth in transgression.” (Proverbs 29:22)

“Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

and many more…But my favorite one as it relates to the anger that is driving this “movement” is:

“Make no friendship with an angry man; And WITH a furious man thou shalt not go:” -Proverbs 22:24 (emphasis mine)

For me, that is the only verse in the Bible I need to not support Trump, or to be his friend, “endorse” him, or go “with” him. Believe me (sorry…had to use that), this isn’t the only reason why I don’t support him. There are lots of reasons. Reasons that people love. Tremendous reasons (I can’t help myself). This is why I am confused at the evangelical support he is receiving. Do Christians even read their Bibles? Do they not realize how ignorant they look? Do they not realize the rhetoric they are using flies in the face of Scripture and is an affront to the God they say they love? Not to mention the profanity…yikes! Anyways…I’m not “mad” at you. I’m sad and confused. Stop telling people you are sinning (anger) as an explanation for your vote. It doesn’t look good on ya…
